Wut do they do with the art work?

To give a rather shorthand of everything that happened. DeviantArt forced everyone's artwork to be labeled as "Allowed to be used for ai art generators" without anyone's consent. Ai Which "learn" from the art shoved into them to spit out a different art it tries to make itself. So what DA did was basically Ignore the labels on the artworks that say "Not for free use" and slap a label on that bypassed it not only for DeviantArt's own ai generator, but for third parties. It would be similar to if Newgrounds automatically changed everyone's Licensing settings on their posts to full "Creative commons/Free use" and also didn't make any site-wide announcement for it.

Then they spent the rest of the day in a livestream after backlash started happening trying to convince the entirety of the art community that This was a good idea and "the way of the future". It was disgusting. They blocked chat for the first third of the stream, and then banned chat for the final third because of the criticism.

If you are anymore curious, want to listen to their interview and stream that happened, I got the links. Plus backup recordings because DA even deleted their own tweets to these recordings.

@Uluri is that legal? That’s so bad in so many ways

I'm pretty sure what they did was not legal. It doesn't sound legal at all at least, especially considering we already had similar licensing marks on DA that indicate if our content was fair use or not like how Newgrounds does. I did see a couple artists talking to lawyers the day of. I'd love to see if it goes somewhere, because it was super not okay what DA did.

Anytime DA responded to me in my emails to them on the situation, they responded with extreme legalese speak to avoid and talk around the things I was asking, so I'm pretty sure somewhere there are lawyers getting involved right now. All the responses to me were very specifically written to make sure they don't admit any sort of blame or responsibility for what happened. It was really aggravating.

@Uluri wow…
